If this isn’t one of the most beautiful things you’ve ever heard, well then, turn it up louder! This performance of the song ‘Sanvean’ is from a different date of the currently ongoing Dead Can Dance tour that I attended (Los Angeles a few weeks ago vs. Vienna, VA where I saw the tour on August 27), but it captures what I felt and saw almost perfectly. Lisa Gerrard is one half of the group, and some may recognize her voice as she has been scoring and singing on soundtracks for films like Gladiator (for which she received a Golden Globe nomination), Whale Rider, Ali and The Insider amongst many others. Most Dead Can Dance songs are richly detailed, full of color and grooves, but this one is just Lisa and keyboards, and one of the most beautiful melodies I can think of, from one of the greatest singers we have. Singers who are able to express the purest of emotion and feeling from the deepest part of one’s self, without lyrics, are a unique breed, and Lisa is one of the best – a true treasure. This doesn’t replace the feeling of hearing this in dead silence on a warm summer night in an open air theater in the woods with the brightest moon floating above and the sounds of nature all about, but it will do. The smile she breaks out as she hits that melody at 2:00 in should bring you to your knees. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do – I get goosebumps every time.
